The image of God
Children's sermon
Object:
ice cube in a glass (a half-filled glass of water would
do as well)
Good morning! Today I want to show you something visible and
something invisible. Can anyone tell me the difference between
visible and invisible? (Let them answer.)
I have here the same thing. Part of it is visible and part is invisible. What I have here is water. Part of it is visible -- in other words, you can see it. Part is invisible -- you can't see it. The visible part is the ice (or water). You can see it and feel it and even eat it if you want. The other part is also water -- but it is invisible. None of us can see it. I'm talking about the water in this glass none of us can see. Water comes in three ways -- as liquid we could drink, as solid we could eat, and as a gas we could breathe but not see. The gas part of water is invisible.
God is also invisible. We cannot see God. But Jesus was also God and Jesus was visible. People could see Jesus, hear him, touch him and be aware of him. Jesus taught us about God. He revealed God's nature to us. We would not have known about God's love for us without Jesus. Jesus made the invisible nature of God visible.
Today is an important day because today is Christ the King Sunday. It is a day we honor the visible God, Jesus.
Thank you, Jesus, for letting us see what God is like. Amen.
