John 20:19-31
Children's sermon
Object:
a deck of cards for a card trick
Good morning! After Jesus was raised from the dead, he
appeared to his disciples. One of the disciples named Thomas was
not there when Jesus came and he didn't believe that Jesus had
really shown himself to them. Later, Jesus came back and appeared
again and Thomas was there. When he saw Jesus, he believed, but
Jesus said to him, "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet
have come to believe."
If you have faith, you believe without having to see. Let me
show you what I mean by that. Here is a deck of cards. I can have
you pick out a card from this deck, keep me from seeing it, and
put it back in the deck. Then, even after I shuffle the cards, I
can tell you which card you picked. How many of you believe that
I can do that? (Let them answer.) Okay, those who think I can do
it have faith. The rest of you have to see me do it before you
will believe. You're just like Thomas who wouldn't believe until
he saw with his own eyes.
Okay, Let's do it. (*Do the trick as it is explained below.)
Now you all believe I can do it because you saw it done.
Jesus says that God blesses those who believe without seeing. Do
you all believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior? (Let them
answer.) That's good! You are blessed then because you believe in
him even though you have not seen him. Let's thank God for giving
us faith so that we can believe.
Dear God: We thank you for giving us faith so that we can believe
in Jesus even though we have not seen him. Amen.
*Card trick explanation: use a deck with pictures and arrange
them in advance so they all face the same way. When they draw a
card and look at it, make sure they put it back the opposite way
so that when you go through the deck, you will immediately spot
that particular card. Shuffling will not change this as long as
you shuffle with each part of the deck facing the same way.
