The lamb of God
Children's sermon
Object:
A toy lamb -- perhaps you have a stained glass window
with a lamb on it or the "Agnus Dei" spelled out in your
sanctuary
When John the Baptist saw Jesus one day, he said so that
everyone could hear: "Look, here is the Lamb of God!" John called
Jesus a lamb! Do you know of any reason why John the Baptist
would call Jesus a lamb? (Let them answer.)
A long time ago, the people of God tried to please God by offering their finest lamb to God. It was the best-looking, healthiest lamb of the flock. That is the lamb they would offer. They gave the lamb to God so that God would forgive them.
John the Baptist knew that Jesus was like the lamb given to God. Jesus was the best human being possible and because of Jesus, all those who believe would belong to God. John the Baptist was right -- Jesus is the Lamb of God. (If you have a window, carved lamb on the baptismal font, or any symbols of a lamb in the worship space, point it out to the children at this time. Explain to them the importance of the lamb to the people long ago and the importance of Jesus to us today.)
Something else about lambs -- they are gentle creatures. They don't bite, or scratch, or bark, or jump out at us and scare people. Lambs are gentle -- soft. Jesus is like that. Like a lamb, Jesus loves us and would never do anything to harm us or scare us. Jesus is the "Lamb of God." I'm so glad we have Jesus!
Dear Lamb of God: Thank you for loving us and making us God's people. Amen.
