The Last Supper
Children's sermon
Object:
a chalice and paten (or small plate)
Good morning! Who knows what today is? (get responses) Yes! It's Palm Sunday, which is the last Sunday in Lent. That means that next Sunday is Easter! We've been waiting a long time to celebrate Easter. We're getting close, but we aren't quite ready to celebrate it yet. We still have to tell the story of Jesus' death before we can tell the story of his resurrection.
In one part of today's lesson we hear about the Last Supper. It's the final meal that Jesus had with his disciples on the night before he died. On that night, Jesus and his disciples gathered for a final meal together. While they were together, Jesus held up some bread. He thanked God for it, broke it and gave it to them. He told them that the bread was his body and that it would be broken for them. Then he did the same thing with a cup of wine. He gave thanks for it, gave it to them and said that the wine was his blood that would be shed for them. It was probably confusing to the disciples, but Jesus wanted to help them understand what would be happening on the very next day. Jesus knew that on the next day he was going to die.
Have you ever seen things that look like this? (bring out the chalice and paten) Where? (get their responses) The cup is called a chalice and the plate is called a paten. They are symbols that we use to remember the bread and the wine of the Last Supper. When we have bread and wine together we, in a way, participate with Jesus and the disciples on their last night together. Maybe the next time we remember the Last Supper in church, you will know a little more about why it is so important.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the Last Supper. Please help us always remember the sacrifice that Jesus made for us. Amen.
