Listen to the Shepherd
Children's sermon
Object:
a tape recorder with a blank tape
Good morning! Have you ever listened to your own voice on a
tape? (Let them answer.) I brought a tape recorder this morning,
and I'm going to turn it on while we talk. (Turn on the
recorder.) Now, as we talk I want everyone to say something, so
I'll ask you some questions, and please speak clearly so the
recorder will pick you up. (Have a conversation with the children
about today's Gospel and get them all to speak.)
Okay, now let's play the tape back and you tell me who is
speaking. (Play the recording and let them identify the
speakers.) You see, every person has a distinct voice, and when
we hear that voice, we know who is speaking. Even if someone
tries to disguise his or her voice, we can usually tell who is
speaking.
Jesus tells us that he is the Good Shepherd and that we are
all his sheep. He also says that his sheep know his voice and
they follow him. Where do we hear his voice today? (Let them
answer.) We can hear the voice of Jesus when we read the Bible.
He speaks to us there and tells us what we should do to follow
him. Are you all going to try to follow Jesus, the Good Shepherd?
(Let them answer.) Good! Let's ask him to help us do that.
Dear Jesus, our Good Shepherd: We love you and we want to be good
sheep who follow you. Help us to be faithful sheep who listen to
your voice. Amen.
