Living water
Children's sermon
Object:
a poster that reads: Living Water Lemonade Stand Ä free
lemonade. For a more elaborate object, set up an actual lemonade
stand.
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you or how many of
you have older brothers or sisters who have ever had a lemonade
stand? (Let them answer.) Today's lesson reminds me of a lemonade
stand. In fact, I made a sign for it. It reads: "Living Water
Lemonade Stand -- free lemonade." Wouldn't it be wonderful if all
lemonade stands were free! Some friends of mine and I had a
lemonade stand one hot summer day when I was in grade school. One
of my friends walked up and down the street yelling, "Lemonade
stand. Anyone who is thirsty come and get some lemonade."
That's what reminded me of today's lesson. One time on a festival day Jesus did a very interesting thing. The festival day was a day when many people came to town. The Bible says that Jesus stood among the people and cried out, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink." That may sound like a lemonade stand but it isn't. What was Jesus talking about when he said "anyone who is thirsty come to me?" (Let them answer.) Here is what Jesus was saying. He was telling people that if they wanted to know about God, and if they wanted to learn how to have faith in God, that they should listen to Jesus.
Jesus said one more thing on that festival day. He said, "Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water." He didn't really mean that rivers of water would flow from your heart if you believed in him. He meant something else. He meant that if you believe and follow him that your life would change. It would change for the better. If you follow Jesus, God's Spirit will be part of you. Whenever you agree with others, they will know that God's Spirit is with you. My lemonade stand only offers you something to drink. Jesus' lemonade stand offers you wonderful things. It offers you God's love and God's living water, which is God's Holy Spirit.
