The mediator
Children's sermon
Object:
a teeter-totter
"For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human…" (v. 5)
Good morning, boys and girls! How many of you have ever played on a teeter-totter or a see-saw? (allow answers) Did you like it? (allow answers) Today we're going to talk about how a teeter-totter works. First of all, let's talk about what a teeter-totter looks like. Can anyone describe it to me? (allow answers) Good answers! A teeter-totter looks like a long plank of wood that is attached to a metal bar. The ends of the plank go up and down when you put your weight on it. Does anyone know what the metal bar of a teeter-totter is called? (allow answers) The metal bar, or the part that lets the teeter-totter go up and down, is called a fulcrum. Can you say that with me? Fulcrum.
Teeter-totters aren't the only things that use fulcrums. A fulcrum is a part of a simple machine called a lever. A teeter-totter is a kind of lever. A pair of scissors is a special kind of lever. Another kind of lever is a crowbar. All of these things use fulcrums to help move things. One word we could use to describe a fulcrum is a "mediator." Does anyone know what a mediator is? (allow answers) A mediator is someone who helps get things done. Maybe you are having an argument with your mom. Your dad might act as a mediator: He helps you and your mom come to a solution to your problem. A mediator is someone who helps people come to an agreement. Have any of you been a mediator before? (allow answers)
Fulcrums are like mediators because they help us use our strength to move something. A teeter-totter without a fulcrum is just a flat piece of wood. We need the fulcrum to translate our strength through to the other end of the teeter-totter so that we can lift our friends or siblings up to the sky! It's amazing how important just a little bar can be!
In our Bible verse today, a mediator is just as important as that little metal bar. Our verse tells us that Jesus is the mediator between God and humankind. Jesus is the person who helps us understand God and who helps God hear our prayers and pleas. In fact, Jesus is the only mediator between us and God! Jesus is both human and divine -- which means that he is like you and me: He can feel pain; he can be tempted; he can feel happiness, sadness, joy, sorrow. On the other hand, Jesus is also divine: He is God's Son! Since Jesus is human and God, he is the best -- and only! -- mediator between humans and our God. Jesus is the link that lets God push us toward the skies on the teeter-totter of life. And let me tell you: It's quite a ride! Amen.
