Mission Accomplished!
Children's sermon
Object:
Images of a hot air balloon in flight or landing
While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven.” (v. 51)
Good Morning lovely children,
Welcome to children's message time. It's super fun to see you. How are you? (children respond) Today is a special feast day we call Ascension Day. The direction we look is up. Everybody, let's practice looking up. Congregation, you too, help us look up.
(After everybody looks up for a period of time, proceed with the message.)
Oh, look what I have! (show images of balloon in flight) What is this? (children respond)
Have you ever seen a hot air balloon? (children respond) Ever gone up in one? (children respond) Who would like to ascend in a hot air balloon? (hands raise) Congregation, who of you would like to go up for a hot air balloon ascension. (hands raise)
On the day Jesus ascended into heaven, he reported, “this is what the Messiah accomplished. Messiah, (that is Jesus himself) came to earth, suffered and died and was raised from the dead.” Mission accomplished! Then,“While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven.” But he promised that a new power would come to them. That power and friend would be the Holy Spirit.
Then it was time for the disciples to stop looking up, and look down, and look around.
They too, had a mission to accomplish. They were to go out and share the good news about what Jesus had accomplished. Do children have missions to accomplish? (children respond)
When mom and dad give you a chore to do and you do it how do you feel? (children respond) What is a mission for Jesus you can do? (children respond)
Our mission is to look down and around and see someone who needs a friend. See someone needing food, clothing and a shelter. See someone needing love and acceptance and forgiveness. Imagine being up in that hot air balloon and you look down and around on the planet. What mission do you see? (children respond)
Prayer: Jesus, turn our eyes from looking up, so we may look down, and around. Amen.
