Newness of life
Children's sermon
Object:
a blooming flower
Good morning, boys and girls. One thing about summer I love is
that so many flowers are blooming. Do you like flowers? (Let them
answer.) I brought one with me this morning. I'm going to pass it
around so that each of you can smell its fragrance. This flower
makes me think of this morning's lesson. Remember that just
before Easter Jesus died and was buried. On Easter morning he
defeated death by rising from the dead. That means that death no
longer has power over Jesus. The lesson says that persons who
follow Jesus will be like Jesus. They will walk in a newness of
life.
Here is why all of that reminds me of this flower. This flower started out as a small seed. Imagine that the seed is Jesus. Any of you who have held a seed know that it looks lifeless. As I compare the two I ask myself, "How can anything as wonderful as a beautiful flower come from this lifeless seed?" When you plant a seed in your garden it appears that, for a time, nothing happens. You might think that the seed died. But, suddenly something does happen. The seed grows. It soon grows and becomes a beautiful flower. What we thought was dead and buried is not dead at all. It is full of newness of life. Everyone around it sees the beauty of the flower and smells its fragrance. This flower is like Jesus and the followers of Jesus. We are those followers. When we know Jesus we have a change of life. It is as if our old life died. Suddenly we bloom and become alive in the sunlight of God's love. That's what happens when we become followers of Jesus. Our lesson this morning tells us to be alive to God. We must live our life to God. When we do this, we are each like a beautiful flower, and we walk in newness of life.
