No fear
Children's sermon
Object:
a plastic spider
But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Get up and do not be afraid." (v. 7)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) This morning we are going to talk about fear. How many of you are scared of something? (allow answers) What are you afraid of? (allow answers) People are afraid of all kinds of things. Some people are afraid of heights. Do you know anyone who is afraid of heights? (allow answers) Some people are afraid of spiders. Do you know anyone who is afraid of spiders? (show spider; allow answers) What are some other things that people you know are afraid of? (allow answers)
How do you feel when you see something that you are afraid of? (allow answers) You might start to sweat. You might feel shaky. Maybe you feel like running away -- or maybe your legs feel weak and you feel like you are going to fall down. It's not fun to feel scared!
In our gospel lesson today, we hear about a time when Jesus' disciples are frightened. They went with Jesus and saw a miracle -- they saw Jesus suddenly shine with light, and they saw two ancient prophets appear beside Jesus. Then the voice of God spoke from the heavens! What would you do if you saw something like that? (allow answers) I would sure be nervous! The disciples fell to the ground in fright when they heard God's voice. What do you think God's voice sounds like? (allow answers) God's voice is a voice of power! Maybe God's voice sounds like thunder. Can you imagine a sound like thunder speaking to you in words? (allow answers) It would be amazing, but it would also be scary!
Do you know what Jesus did when he saw the disciples on the ground? (allow answers) Did he kick them and tell them they were cowards? (allow answers) No, he didn't! Instead, Jesus reached out to his disciples and said, "Get up and do not be afraid." Instead of making fun of his disciples, Jesus put out a hand of comfort.
The next time you are afraid of something, think about Jesus' disciples. They were frightened, but someone was standing beside them to tell them it would be okay. We have someone standing beside us, too. In fact, it's the same person that stood by the disciples. Even though we cannot see Jesus, he is still there to help us when we are afraid. Do not be afraid. Jesus is there to keep us safe. Amen.
