No Fish? Go Fish...
Children's sermon
Object:
fishing equipment like a net or rod and reel
“...from now on you will be catching people.” (v. 10b)
Good morning children,
I am so glad to see you today. I have a story from the Bible just for you.
Are you ready to hear it? (children respond)
But first, have you ever gone fishing? (children share their experiences briefly)
My fishing experience is ________________________________________.
Well, one day, Jesus borrowed Peter's boat and pushed out from shore.
The crowd was so large Jesus needed room to teach.
Then after teaching from the boat, Jesus said to the disciples, “go fish.”
They said “no Lord, last night we fished. No fish.”
Jesus told them to try again, “go fish,” and wow! They caught so many fish their nets began to break. In that moment, Simon Peter, and James and John, realized Jesus was really a very, very special person of God. Peter blurts out, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.”
It was revealed to Peter and the others in that moment that Jesus is the one who makes miracles happen!
Guess what happens next. (children guess)
Jesus tells Peter, James and John to “go fish.” Again?
Yes, this time “go fish” is not for lake creatures with gills. “Go fish” is for catching people.
And would you believe that Peter, James and John dropped their nets and began to follow Jesus? In the future they would catch and catch and catch people for God.
Jesus says the same to you and to me, “go fish.”
How are ways that kids like you can, “go fish,” for other kids? (kids give input)
Are their ways moms and dads can, “go fish,” for other moms and dads?
(kids give suggestions like “invite to church”)
Prayer: Jesus, you have called us too, to “Go fish.” Help us to do it. Amen.
