The Nunc Dimittis
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Simeon's story is a story about
patience. He waited a long time to see the Messiah, but he knew
it would happen because he had God's promise and he believed God.
At the right time, he was led to go to the temple and there he
saw Jesus and knew that this was the promised Messiah. His words
are a reminder to all of us that God keeps His promises and our
patience will be rewarded.
*Ask the children to tell you how many more days there are
until the next Christmas. (Since Christmas was yesterday, they
should be able to tell you that it is 364 days away.) Discuss how
this seems a very long time, but it will pass and we will have
another Christmas. Tie this in to the story of Simeon and his
patience in waiting for the Messiah.
*Ask the children to draw pictures of Simeon in the temple
greeting Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. For young children, you can
prepare pictures that they can color. When the pictures are drawn
or colored, have them talk about their pictures and tell what
they think is going on.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Sing or recite the Nunc Dimittis, and then talk about its
meaning.
