One Master Only
Children's sermon
Object:
Money like a $20 or $50 dollar bill
“No slave can serve two masters...you cannot serve God and money.” (v. 13)
Good morning children,
I’m so glad to see you. How are you? (children respond)
Have you ever attempted to do an impossible thing? Has someone ever asked you to do something you could never do — like holding your breath for an hour? (children respond) Can anybody here this morning walk on a wall? Or teach a goldfish to play a clarinet? Is it possible to be in two places at once — like being here in this place and in Hawaii at the same time? (children respond) Not possible is it? Is it possible to ride two bicycles at once? Who can ride one at a time? (children respond) But not two.
Jesus did many impossible things. He walked on water. He raised the dead. He healed the blind and the crippled.
Could you walk on water or bring people back to life from the dead? Nope. (children respond)
When Jesus was talking to the people he told them, “You can’t do two impossible things at the same time. No slave can serve two masters...you cannot serve God and money.”
I have here a 50 dollar bill. (show money) Would it be smart or silly to pray to this $50 bill. Silly! If I worshiped this money, would I be smart or stupid? Stupid.
When I pray to God, am I smart or silly? Smart. When I worship God, am I smart or ignorant? Smart. Can you see the difference? You cannot do both — pray to God and pray to money. Life is about choices. Remember, God made the first choice to love and save you to be his child. Because of that, the Holy Spirit will guide you to make right choices. Choose God, and not wealth, money, nor things, to be your master.
Just as a loyal dog has only one master, children and adults have only one master. We choose God. (hold up money and a symbol for God) (children respond)
Prayer: Dear Lord and master, you first loved and chose us to be your precious children. Now help us make the right choices between God or things, like money. Amen.
