The real number one
Children's sermon
Object:
a blue ribbon, a hand-with-raised-index-finger-on-a-stick, an article from the newspaper that lists a number one team
He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. (v. 18)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever been to the (name of county) Fair? (let them answer) How many of you have ever been in an art contest? (let them answer) What does it mean when someone wins a blue ribbon at the county fair or in an art contest? (let them answer) That's right, the blue ribbon goes to the winner of first place.
How many of you have ever gone to a football game or watched one on television? (let them answer) Have you ever seen someone with a funny-looking hand? (let them answer) What does it mean to have this big finger sticking up in the air? (let them answer) It means "We're number one."
I want to show you something from the newspaper. Every week we can read about the best teams. The team who does best is called the number one team. Let's take a look at which team was the best this past week. (show them the poll and any article that talks about the number one team)
Being number one is very important to people. It shows that they are the best at what they do. People can vote for whom they think is the best at many different things. There are number one teams, players, teachers, school bands, and choirs. People even choose number one restaurants and cities.
The Bible also has a number one who is first above everything. Adam was the first man born and Eve was the first woman born. Methuselah was the oldest man who ever lived and Samson was the strongest. But do you know who the Bible says is number one over everything? (let them answer) That's right, it's Jesus.
If you are first place in everything you must be pretty important. Jesus is the most important person who ever lived on Earth. He is more important than football or blue ribbons. He is more important than school, work, vacation, or anything else that we know. Jesus is Lord over all the Earth and the sun, moon, and stars. Jesus Christ is our Lord and is in first place over everything.
So the next time you see a blue ribbon or a poll in the newspaper I want you to think about Jesus. The next time someone shouts, "We're number one!" and waves his finger in the air, I want you to remember that Jesus is the real number one over everything. Do you think you can remember this? (let them answer) Good!
