Receiving the call
Children's Activity
Object:
Parents and Teachers: How does one answer God's call? In this
Sunday's text Jesus saw Matthew sitting at his tax booth. When
Jesus said, "Follow me," that is exactly what Matthew did.
For young children, make a game of the story. An adult can start by walking around the room. As you identify a child, say to the child, "(Name the child), follow me." Have the child follow behind you as you continue walking around the room. Now it is that child's turn. Have that child call on another child to "follow," and so forth. Soon all the children will be following the leader.
For older children, have them answer the question on how to become a disciple of Christ in a four-panel picture format. Based on the Matthew story of the tax collector, there can be three steps in becoming a disciple: Step one is confronted by Christ "He saw a man called Matthew at the tax office." Step two is called by Christ "Follow me." Step three is changed by Christ "He rose and followed him."
Have students create a four-panel "newspaper cartoon." The first panel includes the title and artist's name. The second panel shows Jesus walking by Matthew the tax collector. The third panel shows Jesus saying, "Follow me." The fourth panel shows Matthew leaving the tax booth and following Christ.
