Sharing the Good News of Christmas
Children's sermon
Object:
a Christmas card with a message of Jesus as Savior
Object: a Christmas card with a message of Jesus as Savior
The Point: We are to bear witness to Jesus that he has come to be our Savior.
The Lesson: Girls and boys, welcome and thank you for coming up to be a part of this special time together.
I bet that you and your family received a lot of Christmas cards over the past several weeks. (let children answer) In our home when we receive a Christmas card, we tape it to the closet door in our hallway. By the time Christmas arrives our door is full of Christmas cards. Every time we opened the closet door to get a winter coat or to hang one up, we saw the cards. Every time we walked down the hallway to and from our kitchen, the good news of Jesus' birth was announced to us from all those cards.
I brought one of those cards to show you this morning. Isn't it beautiful? (let children answer) Listen to the message on this Christmas card: "The angel from heaven said, 'Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.' "
This morning in our reading from Luke, we heard about two special people: Simeon and Anna. They were faithful people who were looking for God to send a Savior to the world. When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple, they knew that Jesus was God's answer to their prayers. Listen to Simeon, "... my eyes have seen our salvation that God has prepared for all his people." And Anna gave thanks to God and began to speak to all who were waiting to be saved by God. Like the Christmas card I shared with you, Simeon and Anna were spreading the good news that Jesus has come to save us. It is God's plan for us all.
When I get home today, I am going to put this Christmas card on our mirror in the bedroom. Then I will see it every morning when I get up. It will remind me that Christmas is not about one day a year but is truly good news for every day of my life. It will also remind me to be like Simeon and Anna; to tell others about the good news of Christmas.
Closing Prayer: Children, let us hold hands and close this time with a prayer. Jesus, thank you for coming to be our Savior and Lord. Help each of us to look to you for forgiveness and grace. In some special way help us to keep the reason for Christmas alive every day by telling someone about your saving love. Amen and Merry Christmas!
