Sun and rain
Children's sermon
Object:
an apple
… so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. (v. 45)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today we are going to talk about good people and bad people. How many of you know good people? (allow answers) What makes a person good? (allow answers) Okay, now -- without naming any names! -- how many of you know bad people? (allow answers) What makes a person bad? (allow answers)
There are lots of people out there who are very good people. And there are lots of people out there who are very bad people. And do you know what? Sometimes bad things happen to good people. Sometimes good things happen to bad people. Why do you think that is? (allow answers) We don't have any real answers for that. Whether you are a good person or a bad person, the sun will still rise on you in the morning. Whether you are a good or bad person, it will still rain sometimes. Good people and bad people do not necessarily get separate treatment.
But that doesn't sound right! God should punish bad people and reward good people! Right? (allow answers) That sounds really good to us. Sometimes we wish that God would just take care of our problems. Unfortunately, that's not how it works.
How many of you know what free will is? (allow answers) Free will means that we can make our own decisions. When you have free will, that means that no one is forcing you to do -- or stop from doing -- anything. Sounds good, right? (allow answers) Well, when God created humans, he gave us free will. That means we can make our own choices -- God doesn't control our decisions. However, that also means we can make bad choices. How many of you know the story of Adam and Eve? (allow answers) God created Adam and Eve and gave them a home in paradise. God said they could do anything they wanted -- except eat the fruit from a particular tree. Well, to make a long story short, Adam and Eve decided to eat the fruit. God punished them by kicking them out of paradise. The act of Adam and Eve eating the apple is called "original sin" -- because this was the first time that humans used their free will to disobey God.
Although disobeying God is not a good way to use our free will, it is not the only way to use our free will. We can use our free will to make good choices, too! Free will is a good thing, because we are in control of ourselves -- but it is also a heavy responsibility. Since God is not making our decisions for us, we have to be much more careful about the choices we make. It is easy to fall into the trap of bad decisions and easy ways out. No matter what we do, God will treat us equally -- the sun will still rise, the rain will still fall -- but we should strive our best every day to be someone that God can be proud of, whether it is sunny or raining. Amen.
