Taking our sins away
Children's sermon
Object:
white paint and black paint
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we
might become the righteousness of God. (v. 21)
Good morning, boys and girls. Has anyone ever talked to you about sin? (let them answer) Can you tell me what is sin? (let them answer) Do you know what sin does to you? (let them answer)
Sin is really bad. Sin is so bad that it causes us to break away from God. God has no sin and we are filled with sin. This is what causes our break up. Sin causes us to hurt sometimes, it causes us to hide sometimes and it can even make us sick enough to die. That is how bad sin is for us.
I want you to see what sin can do so I brought along some paint to help us better understand what happens when sin gets inside of us. I have some very white paint that is beautiful. It looks creamy and rich. I am going to put in a little black paint and stir it up. What is happening to the white paint? (let them answer) The white paint is changing into a different color. God made us to be pure and creamy, but our sin makes us different.
God tried everything he could think of to help all people become pure again. He gave us laws like the Ten Commandments and we broke the laws. He punished us with floods and then with no rain. He gave us prophets and teachers but we did not listen. Finally, God came up with the perfect plan. Do you know what the plan is? (let them answer)
God sent Jesus into the world. Jesus was pure, he had no sin, and he obeyed his Father in heaven. People began to listen to Jesus, but the sin in the world was still here. Then came the final part of the plan. God the Father told Jesus that he must die for all of the sin in the world. All of your sins, my sins, and everyone in the world's sins were all going to be dumped upon Jesus and he would die to save us. But what happened to our sins? Jesus received them and he was filled with pain and sorrow. He died on a cross, then God raised him up to heaven. He took our sins away.
Because Jesus took our sins, we are now free. When we are baptized, our sins are forgiven. Jesus makes us pure again. When we believe in Jesus and ask his forgiveness for the sins that we have, Jesus wipes them away and makes us pure again. We have Jesus so that we do not break up with God ever again.
The next time you see people mixing paint, I want you to thank God for sending Jesus and taking away your sin. Amen.
