Children's sermon
Object:
a large pencil with an eraser and many small pencils with erasers to hand out to the children
Good morning, boys and girls. Today is Holy Trinity Sunday, one of the most important days on our calendar. It is important because it is a day when we try to understand how God shows himself to us. We all know there is a God, but how do you and I know him? How many of you believe God created the world? (let them answer) That's right, God made the earth and all of the things that grow on it, like trees and corn and flowers. God made everything. And God made animals and people. God is our creator. How many of you agree? (let them answer)
How many of you believe that Jesus is our Savior? (let them answer) God sent Jesus into the world, and he lived, died, and was resurrected to live again. When he died and rose again, he forgave us all of our sins and invited us to share his new kingdom after we die and are resurrected. That's why we call him the Savior or the Son of God. How many of you agree with what I am saying? (let them answer)
Then we believe God sent his Holy Spirit so that we would know that God was present in our world today. Jesus went back to live with the Father, but the Spirit is here with us today. How many of us feel God is with us today as the Holy Spirit? (let them answer)
So we believe there is one God, but there are three persons. How many of you have a mother? (let them answer) Does your mother have a brother or sister? Does that mean that the same person is a mother and also a sister to her sister? Does your mother have a mother, your grandmother? Is your mother a daughter to her mother? Does that mean the same person is a mother, a sister, and a daughter? (let them answer) I think it does.
Let's try one other idea. I brought something with me. What do we call this? (let them answer) That's right, a pencil. A pencil is this piece of wood with an eraser and some lead. You hold the wood, write with the lead, and erase with the rubber end. It is a pencil, but it has three different parts.
God is one God, but we know him in three ways. God is our creator, our Savior, and our Holy Spirit. Three persons, one God. A pencil has three parts, but it is only one pencil. Three parts, one pencil.
Today we worship our God as the Trinity, one God, three persons. God bless you and I hope each time you use a pencil, you will remember God as three persons.
