The touch of power
Children's sermon
Object:
a bandage for each child
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever fallen down and scraped your knee? (wait for a show of hands) It really hurts. What do you do first? (let them answer) Probably you'd cry! Then run to one of your parents and they would clean it up with soap and water and probably put some first aid cream on it. Then what would they put on it? (let them answer) A bandage! Here are some bandages. You may each have one and put it on your knee or your finger or your arm. (pass out the bandages and comment on where they are putting the bandages) We don't really have scrapes there, but we're going to pretend. Does a bandage make your scrape feel better? (let them answer) You might think it does, but it really doesn't make your scrape feel better. What does a bandage really do? (let them answer) It protects your scrape and keeps all the dirt away from it. That makes your scrape heal better when the dirt can't get in. There's something else that usually happens when you get a scrape. Does anyone know what it is? (let them answer) It's a special kind of touch from your mom or dad. When you get hurt, they will first clean you up and put a bandage on your scrape. But then they do something that really makes you feel good. They hug you or kiss you! That's a special kind of touch that really makes you feel better. Sometimes they might say, "It's all right. You'll be okay." But it's the touch that helps heal. Sometimes you might be at someone else's house and get a scrape. Even when they do the same things to fix you up, their touch doesn't make you feel as good as your parents' touch!
Our lesson today is about Jesus and people coming to hear him and wanting to be healed of their diseases. Jesus had a special power to heal people. It worked on children and it worked on grown-ups. They all came to Jesus. Our verse says that "all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them." That's a very special power to have. Touching is a very important kind of healing power. Jesus had it and sometimes our parents have it, too. When someone is crying or hurting, try touching or holding their hand or hugging them. It makes them feel better. You can have that power, too. Touching is another way of giving the power of love that comes to all of us from God.
