The touch of power
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers: The children's message is about the power of touch. Jesus' healing touch was given to those who were feeling a need for it: those who were diseased in mind or body. The message emphasized that we each have the power of touch to help others when they need that touch. Spend some time discussing different types of touch. There are hugging, clapping, hitting, pushing, signing (hearing impaired), holding hands, and many, many more. There are positive types of touch and negative types of touch. All touch has results and each touch has feelings that it creates. Make a list on a piece of tagboard or chalkboard of as many kinds of touches the children can name. After you list them, you may want to identify the possible feelings created by the touch. For instance, hitting produces a different result depending on who or what is hit. Hitting a nail with a hammer or hitting a punching bag is a much better solution to frustration than hitting another child. Hugging can be a good healing touch unless you are hugged by someone and it becomes uncomfortable. Depending on the ages of the children, you may want to discuss further how powerful touch can be in both a positive and a negative way. The essential message is that love and caring for others is communicated through touch.
Parents: "Have you hugged your child today?" is a popular bumper sticker. Your touch is a powerful healer. It is a way to communicate your caring wordlessly. Someone has said that everyone needs at least four hugs a day to be healthy. Have you hugged your child four times today?
