"So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth." (v. 10)
Good morning, boys and girls! Today we are going to talk about names. Can you tell me your full name, which is your first name, your middle name, and your last name? (have everyone share their name) You all have beautiful names! When you were born, your parents spent time deciding what name they would give you. Names are important. Can you tell me why names are important? (allow answers) Your name is how people know you!
To help them pick a name, your parents might have used a book like this. It is a baby names book. It has long lists of names and usually information like what country the name is from and what the name means. For example, the name "Daniel" is a name from the Bible. It means "God is my judge." The name "Amanda" means "loveable." Baby books are full of names and their meanings.
While there are thousands of names for parents to choose from when they are naming their baby, each name is special -- just like each of you are special! There is one name I think of as more special than any other name. It is the name of someone who is very important in the church. Can you think of what this name might be? (allow answers)
That name is Jesus! Our Bible verse talks about Jesus' name being important to us. The verse says: "At the name of Jesus, every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth." Wow! Not only does everyone on earth think Jesus' name is an important name, but everyone in heaven does, too!
What does that mean, to have an important name? Does it mean that just the name is important -- once we know Jesus' name, then we know everything we need to know? (allow answers) No! Once we know Jesus' name, we only know part of the story. In order to understand why Jesus' name is important, we need to hear the whole Easter story.
It's just like our names. You might know someone's name, but that doesn't mean you know all about them. In fact, two people might have the same name but be completely different! Maybe two boys are named Jacob. One might like vanilla ice cream and playing with trains, but the other might prefer chocolate ice cream and building Legos™. One Jacob might have an older sister, while the other Jacob has a twin brother. So even though you might know they are both named Jacob that doesn't mean you know everything about them.
So even though names are important, it is also important to learn about the person behind the name. At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bend -- because those people know the reason Jesus is so important. Amen.
