Who's In Charge?
Children's sermon
Object:
2 or 3 books with the author's name on the cover
Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?”
Good morning boys and girls. I keep forgetting to ask you every Sunday but I won’t today. Which one of you is in charge? (Let them answer.) What I want to know is which one of you tells the others what to do? (Let them answer.) There seems to be a different opinion. One of you thinks he is in charge and others don’t think so.
When you go into a Sunday school room which one of you is in charge? (Let them answer.) That’s right, the teacher is in charge. Do you know why they are in charge? (Let them answer.) The reason they are in charge is because the church council or the Sunday school superintendent gave them the authority. That’s an interesting word isn’t it? Let’s say the word together. Authority -- and it means being in charge.
Moms and dads have authority don’t they? (Let them answer.) They are in charge of the whole family. I want to show you three books that I have in my hands. I also want you to see that on every book there is a different name. That name that you see is the author of the book. He or she wrote it. He or she is the author. No one else can say they wrote the book except the author.
The people that ran the church in the time of Jesus were surprised that Jesus seemed like he was in charge. They asked him who gave him that authority. They knew that they had not given it to him so where did he get it? Where do you think Jesus got his authority? (Let them answer.) That’s right, God gave him the authority to do and say whatever he wanted. Jesus was in charge then and is still in charge today. Amen.
