Worship with reverence and awe
Children's sermon
Object:
A hymn book, offering basket, and a candle (objects
commonly used in your worship service)
Good morning! Today I have with me some things that may be
common to you. What is the purpose of this hymnal? (Let them
answer.) And this offering basket? ... Candle? These are things
we use here this morning in our worship service. Worship is
important to us because it brings us closer to God. Our God is a
wonderful, marvelous, awesome God. If we could see God in all of
God's glory, we could not even live. God is too wonderful and
powerful and magnificent for words.
Since God is so wonderful, we have special ways of showing that. We sing hymns from our hymnal such as (quote from a hymn of your tradition that the children might be familiar with and that also reflects praise to God. One such hymn might be "Holy, Holy, Holy.")
We also do something every Sunday with this offering basket/plate. We pass it from one person to another so that many members of this congregation will put their most important money in it for God. We call this "first fruits giving." It is that giving of the first money that comes our way. Many members also "tithe" which means giving 10% or more of one's income. God is so important to us and that is why we give so generously.
We light candles to show that God is present here and the living Spirit of God is like a living flame. The candles add a certain atmosphere to our worship service.
Many people wear their "Sunday best" clothing out of respect and honor to God. On Sundays we like to look and act our best because we love God so much and want to show it.
