In 1219, Francis of Assisi and two of his followers sailed for Egypt on a maiden missionary journey to convert the Moslems. Arriving in Damietta, they discovered themselves to be in the midst of a heated conflict between the Moslems and Crusaders. Distressed that the children of God should be fighting among themselves, Francis sought out the camp of the Moslem warrior prince, Saladin, and prevailed upon him to love the Christians instead of slaughtering them. Saladin admired Francis' courage but dismissed his appeal with a mocking smile.
