For 14 days last year...

For 14 days last year, President Bill Clinton tried to mediate a peace settlement between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, attempting to bring an end to the division that has separated those peoples for 52 years. Clinton even persuaded them to continue discussions with secretary of state Madeline Allbright moderating, while he attended a financial summit in Japan. Hopes were always dim because Arafat had to deal with conservatives back home who were wary of any concessions he might make, and Barak narrowly survived a no-confidence vote in the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. But another big factor in the failure of the talks was Mr. Clinton himself, who as a lame-duck president with only six months left in office, no longer had the political clout to bring these two strong men together in agreement.
It takes someone with fortitude and strength to bring about a reconciliation, especially if one of the parties is hostile. Only Jesus is equal to the task of bringing us face-to-face with Almighty God. It is he, the pre-eminent Son of God who, by his death, reconciled us to God.
