In 1939, a German professor left Union Seminary in New York to return to war-torn Germany. He was Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He left to share in the sufferings of his people. He wrote in a letter to Reinhold Niebuhr: "I shall have no right to participate in the reconstruction of Christian life in Germany after the war if I do not participate in the trials of this time with my people...." Back in Germany he participated in the church's resistance to the Third Reich. He was also involved in the infamous -- and failed -- attempt to assassinate Hitler. He was arrested, imprisoned, and executed.
