Amanda was a black slave woman and had been all her life. One day she was bent over an old wooden washing tub, rubbing out clothes on a washboard. The owner of the plantation watched her for awhile, then asked her, "Amanda, where would you rather be right now than any place upon the earth?" The owner thought she would answer, "in a beautiful home like yours, with servants to wait upon me." He was surprised when she said, "I would rather be in God's word than any place, for this earth and all that is in it shall be destroyed, but God's word will live forever."
