An abolitionist, visiting a Maryland farm in 1859, observed several slaves working to clear a field of heavy rocks. Their labor was extremely difficult and the men were perspiring profusely in the oppressive heat, yet they were all singing loudly and joyously.
"In Gloryland, sweet Gloryland,
I'll see sweet Jesus in Gloryland,
I'll rest my soul in Gloryland,
An' sing all day in Gloryland."
