About 100 years ago, the steamship "Central America" ran aground and began to sink a few miles off Sandy Hook, at the entrance to New York harbor. Crowds gathered at the Battery, at the southern tip of Manhattan, as rescue boats began to bring survivors of the shipwreck to shore.
