According to an old Iroquois tale, before time began, the forest animals held a council to decide if they should have light in their all-dark world. Bear forcefully growled, "We must have darkness." This seemed to settle the matter since Bear, by virtue of his size and gruffness, dominated the council. But then young Chipmunk suddenly said, "Let there be light." Chipmunk kept saying it until the sun actually spread its rays throughout the forest world.
At that point, however, Bear moved angrily toward Chipmunk, who ran for the safety of a tree, but ended up with Bear-clawed stripes on its back, a permanent reminder of the conflict between darkness and light.
