After Ferdinand Marcos fled the Malacanang Palace in Manila, Mrs. Aquino promised to open the national residence to the public. In the twenty years while Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos had lived behind closed doors there, rumors and legends had grown about the luxury in which they may have lived. But when the palace was finally opened, and the "unwashed" from the streets and countryside filed through, they were stunned. With all the furnishings and splendor left in place, the palace was even more treasure-laden than they had imagined.
