Alex wanted a dog. He wanted a dog so badly that every story he wrote was a story about a dog, and every picture he drew had a picture of a dog in it. Finally his parents consented. If Harold and Erma, who were members of their church as well as managers of the local dog pound, ever got a nice, small dog, then Alex could have it. Alex was so excited that not a Sunday went by without his asking Harold and Erma if they'd found his dog. The Sundays added into months and then a full year. And then one day it happened. The phone rang. "We have Alex's dog," said Harold.
