Although John Wycliffe translated the Latin Vulgate into English in 1382, it is not an exaggeration to say that every "official" translation of the New Testament, down to the New English Bible, was little more than a revision of William Tyndale's work. Tyndale, an Oxford scholar, depended upon Greek and Hebrew texts for his translation. England opposed the undertaking, branding Tyndale a heretic. Consequently, his work was printed in Germany (1525-31).
