In ancient times, blood was seen as being effective in establishing community between God and human beings, a function it serves in the convenant-making ceremony in Exodus. Perhaps at a primal level, we still see blood as having significance in forming bonds. "Blood brother" ceremonies have held their place in the rites of the young. A cadre of young boys forms a secret club that meets at certain mystical hours in a treehouse.
