Angry words are among the most destructive. Yet their destructive power is as nothing, compared to what happens when they are bottled up. Jonathan Swift once spoke of “the artillery of words.” Anger is like a cannon. It can cause a lot of damage to the thing at which it’s pointed — but that’s nothing compared to what happens if the barrel is plugged up. Suppressed anger, as we all know, can come out inappropriately and destructively. The key to dealing with anger is finding an appropriate way to express it, a way that causes damage neither to others nor ourselves.
