Any birth is special, but...

Any birth is special, but the arrival of a first child is doubly so. When our adopted daughter arrived, we had been awaiting her for several years, a time of stress, anxiety and emptiness. Our marriage was good, but there was a child-shaped hole at its center. A future of a childless home seemed cheerless and dark, and the government-run adoption process took forever to run its course. Then one day in August the telephone rang. A baby had been matched with us -- would we take her? Our hearts soared! How could we possibly say no?
