Anyone who has read the book or seen the movie version of Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind, still remembers the dress Scarlet had made from the drapes in one of the rooms of her southern plantation home during the American Civil War. This was a period in our history when shortages were beyond anything most of us in this country can imagine today; it was a time in which three-fourths of the articles in common use simply were not available; substitutions had to be made.
