Ash Wednesday is an important red-letter day in the life of the church. It inaugurates the season of Lent and is a day on which repentance, self-examination, and seeking God are to be uppermost in the Christian's pilgrim life. In many Christian churches the ashes placed upon the worshipers on this day are made in the shape of the cross of Calvary. Often the ashes are made by burning the palm leaves used in the Palm Sunday service during the past year. The Roman Catholic Church has emphasized Ash Wednesday as a fast day for centuries.
