The harm, hurt, and hate caused by taking Scripture out of context is almost unimaginable. It is literally true that we can prove anything by choosing, cutting, and editing God's Word to us.
The misuse of the Gospel of John can give us several examples. One is found in the verses under consideration.
The ambitious religious purveyor of half truths can quote "ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you" for hours on end. He can sway crowds. He can fill offering plates. He can have the innocent (and not so innocent) eating out of his hand. His method is subtle, sinister, and sick. Ask for anything and it shall be done. Well, it does come from the Word of God, doesn't it? No one can doubt such a reliable source!
He never bothers to tell his listeners that he is quoting from part of a verse, that there is a condition preceding the quote, and that the two must be seen and understood together.
"If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you" opens up vistas for loving service and continual spiritual growth.
