The biosphere is the relatively thin zone of the earth's environment that supplies those characteristics necessary to support life. It ranges from about ten kilometers into the atmosphere (six miles) to the deepest depths of the ocean floor. Life in the zone depends on energy derived from the sun, circulation of heat, and essential nutrients. The only exceptions are deep-sea thermal vents where the sole provided energy is generated by the earth itself.
