Blockbuster author and movie director Michael Crichton, believe it or not, was in medical school well on his way to becoming a doctor. He financed the schooling by writing fanciful novels. Eventually he became troubled by some rigid attitudes in the field of medicine, and by something fluid inside himself. He found himself imagining alien diseases and dramatic causes for his patients' ordinary maladies. He didn't think he should build a regular practice requiring a seriousness of manner he wasn't sincere about.
