Bob had his sights on a Ph.D. in engineering. He wanted to teach and do research. Nothing else seemed to matter. He had completed his B.S. at Rice University and was planning to begin his graduate work in the fall at M.I.T. That summer, he received an offer to begin working immediately at a large engineering firm. The offer included a generous, well-paid four-month leave beginning six months after he began his new work. His family encouraged him to accept the position, since it would give him some more time to assess whether he really wanted to study engineering at the graduate level.
