The book of Philemon contains numerous themes. Bible commentators usually
emphasize the main one: Paul's expectation that Philemon free the slave, Onesimus.
Clearly that was Paul's chief purpose in writing this short letter. He wanted the wealthy
Philemon to accept the former slave now as a brother.
Paul expected Philemon to do something else that modern minister's should ask all church members to do. He wanted Philemon to witness for Christ. Philemon had great potential for the cause of Jesus. Paul wanted him to realize his capabilities. He urged Philemon: "I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ."
Most of us want the Lord to do things for us. Rarely do we attempt to identify what we can do for the Lord's kingdom. Do you know what you can do for the Lord? Even more important, are you getting it done?
