Can you identify with the people who began to cry when they heard what the law required? Are you sensitive enough to your sin that it hurts you? In God's name, don't stop there. Hear what these people were told. They were told that they should not mourn or cry but to go home and have a feast and to share with others. "Today is holy to our Lord, so don't be sad. The joy that the Lord gives you will make you strong (Nehemiah 8:10, TEV)."
When President William McKinley was shot in 1901 at the Buffalo exposition, McKinley did not immediately die. One of the features of the exposition was an X-ray machine which was demonstrated. Apparently no one thought of using the X-ray machine to try to locate the bullet and thereby save McKinley's life. What a great opportunity was wasted!
We Christians have even more reason to celebrate than the people of Nehemiah's time. We know our sin is forgiven. We know we have life eternal. Don't waste this opportunity to appropriate God's promises for yourself!
