On the communion Sunday leading to Easter, the pastor decided to take what a few members of the worship committee considered a huge risk. For him, the sacrament had become routine, yes, even boring. The congregation went through the usual motions of munching momentarily on a tiny piece of white bread and drinking the grape juice. So, on communion Sunday following the sermon, the people had a surprise in store for themselves. Some gasped as the pastor raised the dark Russian rye bread to symbolize their political, social, and cultural enemies.
