As dawn crept across the rooftops, Beth watched new shadows lengthen, given birth by the rising sun. And suddenly Beth was aware of shadows in a way she'd never actively noticed because it was the sort of thing one just took for granted. But shadows required light in order to be. As obvious as the fact was, it had all sorts of implications for Beth. She realized that for every shadow in her life, good or bad, there had to be a source of light creating it. She had often thought of the periods in her life when God seemed distant as periods of shadow -- an absence of light.
