Despite the promise of the new Jerusalem, many of today's people, both inside and outside of the institutional church, are frightened and lost. Many reflect the remark of Carl Jung, the psychologist, who said that many spend the first half of their lives afraid of life, and the second half afraid of death. William Keucher, in a sermon titled, "God at Man's Corner," describes one predicament. A cartoonist portrays that predicament by suggesting that our cleverness has conquered space and unlocked some of the mysteries of the atom.
