The distance between the rich and the poor may be financially great, but it can also be geographically small. The "Million Dollar Mile" of North Michigan Avenue in Chicago hosts high-class travel agencies and retail stores. Just blocks south on the same street is a commercial area in which visitors to town think twice about walking alone. In Washington, D.C., some of the nation's most impoverished and crime-ridden neighborhoods are in the shadow of the Capitol, where the wealth and laws of the land converge in the seat of power.
