Doctors, lawyers, and theologians, as well as ordinary men and women, are facing one of the most fundamental questions ever to trouble the human race: when is a person dead? How do you define death? Formerly, death was defined as the time when the heart stops and breathing ends. But when it was learned that machines could restart hearts and lungs, and that they could be kept going long after other signs of life had ended, new definitions had to be made.
